Table Mountain Overnight Options

Most people’s Table Mountain experience is limited to a day-time hike or cruise up in the cable car to marvel at the views. However, those in the know choose the complete and privileged experience of staying overnight on this legendary mountain. Why only feast your soul on the fynbos, fresh mountain air and stunning views? You could also enjoy the specialist knowledge of local guides and indulge in sundowners, fireside conversation, fine food, local wines and plush beds. Overnight lodges are sensitively-converted historical buildings that have been decorated with designs by some of South Africa’s top designers. To top it all off, you’ll wake up to a panoramic sunrise and the smell of fresh croissants and coffee - all in a mountain setting, in the middle of the city.

Some routes and activities are weather dependent. Professional guides will also assess the group’s ability and requirements, to select the most suitable routes.

A: Table Mountain Trail (2 days / 2 nights)

Day 1 (excluding Optional extra - 'Walking City Tour' below)

Arrive at the Platteklip Wash House in Oranjezicht at the foot of Table Mountain at 17h00 to welcoming drinks and snacks. A Cape Malay dinner is served, either along a shared dining table or in the tranquility of the garden setting. Thereafter it’s off to our plush beds, in anticipation of the following day’s hike.

Day 2

Wake up to the sound of birdsong and the smell of breakfast being prepared. A professional guide helps to select the most suitable ascent up the mountain - Platteklip Gorge for the energetic and the cable car for the stroller (weather permitting). We set off sans your overnight luggage, which is transported to the Overseer’s Cottages at the top of the mountain.

On top, we head for our picnic lunch-spot at Maclear’s Beacon, the highest point of the mountain, at 1087m. Your route follows the historic Smuts Track to the Overseer’s Cottages on the eastern side of the mountain, where you are re-united with your overnight luggage. After a hot shower, enjoy pre-dinner drinks while overlooking False Bay and the distant mountain ranges, or Orange Kloof – the weather will dictate. Then it is time for a South African braai (barbecue) or potjiekos (cast-iron pot-on-the-fire) stew, which is served around the fire - either under the stars, or inside on cooler evenings.

Day 3

A wholesome breakfast is followed by a stroll to the Waterworks Museum. Then it’s on to the top of Kasteels Poort on the western side of the mountain for the vital photograph of ‘the diving board’ that overlooks Camps Bay and the Atlantic Coastline, far below. The walk back to the cottages takes you past the historic Hely-Hutchinson, Woodhead, Victoria and Alexandra dams, and back towards the view of False Bay and the Cape Flats.

After a final picnic we complete the experience with a hike down to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, after which you will be re-united with your overnight luggage.

*Optional extra (on Day 1, prior to start of the above trail) – guided ‘Walking City Tour’ programme:

08h00: Arrive at Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V & A Waterfront
08h30: Boat tour of the harbour (weather permitting)
09h30: Start of Bo-Kaap and City tour
11h00: Tea at a restaurant in Bo-Kaap
12h00: District Six Museum
13h15: Walk through the Company Gardens to a restaurant for lunch
14h15: Walk through Oranjezicht past the historic reservoirs
16h00: Arrive at the Platteklip Wash House to join the Table Mountain Trail (as above)

B: ‘Wake Up on Table Mountain’-Kirstenbosch Excursion (1½ Days / 1 night)

Day 1

Meet your guide/s in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on the eastern side of the mountain at 14h00. Join a specialist Kirstenbosch guide for a tour through the gardens to the contour path. From here the mountain guide will select the route to be taken to the top, according to the group’s ability and the weather.

Arrive at the Overseer’s Cottages, where you are re-united with your overnight luggage. After a hot shower, enjoy pre-dinner drinks while overlooking False Bay and the distant mountain ranges, or Orange Kloof (weather dependent). Then it is time for a South African braai (barbecue) or potjiekos (cast-iron pot-on-the-fire) stew, which is served around the fire - either under the stars, or inside on cooler evenings.

Day 2
