Oystercatcher Trail

A: The Full Trail (3½ days / 4 nights)

The trail itself lasts for 3½ days, with arrival the night before the start and departure after brunch on the fourth day of walking. The trail starts on Sundays and Tuesdays only.

Day 1:
Arrive in Mosselbay to meet your trail host and guide (collection from George Airport can be arranged) for dinner and a pre-trail briefing. Accommodation is in a guest house in the town within easy walking distance of the start of the trail, or you may stay at the Sandpiper Cottages in Boggomsbay (in which case transport is arranged to the start).

Day 2: 15km

Meet your guide and, after breakfast, proceed to the starting point of the hike at Cape St Blaize cave. The contour path meanders along cliff edges and then drops down to sea level along the St. Blaize trail. Enjoy magnificent and wild scenery, view dolphins and whales in season and swim in safe rock pools. Hike past Pinnacle Point Golf Estate and visit the caves of ancient Hunter Gatherers, where the stark contrast between Stone Age and present-age living is experienced. Finish in Danabay where you are collected for transfer to overnight at Sandpiper Cottages in Boggomsbay.

Day 3: 13km

Transfer to the starting point at Danabay after breakfast. Along the beach walk, see evidence of the ancient shell middens left by the Khoi-San people, who inhabited the area long before Europeans reached these shores. Hear stories of the ships that have been wrecked along this coast in relatively-recent history. Learn about the endangered African Black Oystercatcher, after which the trail has been named. Walk on to Boggomsbay for another overnight stay at Sandpiper Cottages.

Day 4: 15km

After breakfast, follow the rocky shore between Boggomsbay and Fransmanshoek, where we should have opportunity to swim and snorkel in the ocean. From here the route follows varied terrain along the coast over beaches, rocky shores and tall sand dunes. See ancient fish traps and more Stone Age middens, as well as a San grave. The day ends at Kanonpunt where we overnight close to the sea at one of two cottages (Dune House or Cap Vacca).

Day 5: 4km

Enjoy a winding-down hike to the mouth of the Gourits river after breakfast. This is a last opportunity to collect shells and take photographs, before being transferred back to Boggomsbay. Here we enjoy a final champagne brunch, before saying goodbye.

B: The Shorter Option (1½ days / 2 nights)

Day 1:

Arrive at Sandpiper Cottages in Boggomsbay mid to late afternoon. Meet your trail host and guide at 18h00 for a fireside dinner and pre-trail briefing.

Day 2: 15km

After breakfast, follow the rocky shore between Boggomsbay and Fransmanshoek, where we should have the opportunity to swim and snorkel in the ocean.

Day 3: 4km

Enjoy a winding-down hike to the mouth of the Gourits river after breakfast. This is a last opportunity to collect shells and take photographs, before being transferred back to Boggomsbay. Here we enjoy a final champagne brunch, before saying goodbye.
